Guides
Straight-talking basics that stay useful all year. They are general tips, not rules from any one institution. Always check the details with the institution or funder you are dealing with.
Bursary tips
- Start early. Funding applications often open months before the academic year. Check each funder's own opening and closing dates on its official page.
- Read the requirements. Look at field of study, marks, household income, province, and what the funder expects from you afterwards.
- Get your documents ready. Usually a certified copy of your ID, your latest results, proof of household income, proof of acceptance or registration and your bank details. Keep scans on your phone.
- Apply for more than one. Do not rely on a single application.
- Never pay to apply. A real funder does not charge to look at your application. Walk away from anyone who asks for money, your PIN or a one-time code.
- Use official channels. Type the funder's address yourself and ask the financial aid office at your institution where to look.
- Put the deadlines in your phone calendar, and follow up politely after you apply.
- Tell the truth on every form. Funders check.
uWize does not list bursaries, amounts or closing dates. Ask each funder directly.
Study tips
- Plan your week. Put lectures, study time, sleep and rest in a simple timetable.
- Study little and often. Blocks of 45 to 50 minutes with short breaks beat an all-nighter.
- Go to lectures and tutorials, and start an assignment the day you get it.
- Practise with past papers and explain a topic out loud, as if to a friend.
- Find a small study group of two to four people who actually study.
- Ask for help early. Use lecturers' consultation hours, tutors and the writing centre.
- Do your own work. Reference your sources and keep to your institution's academic honesty rules.
- Look after yourself. Sleep, eat, move, and talk to someone if it gets heavy. See Wellness for contacts.
How student accommodation works
- Residence or private? Residences are run by the institution and usually have their own application and closing date. Private options include shared houses, studios and flats, and garden cottages or rooms in a home.
- Read the lease. Ask what is included (water, electricity, wifi, meals), how much the deposit is and when you get it back, the notice period and the house rules.
- Check before you pay. View the place or do a video walk-through, make sure you are dealing with the real landlord, and never pay before you have a written lease. Keep your receipts.
- Think about getting to campus. Count the transport cost and how safe the trip is after dark.
- Budget for the whole month. Rent, utilities, food and transport.
Find Accommodation
On uWize you contact the landlord directly. Look for the Verified badge. uWize does not take part in the deal.
Are you a university or college? Post your open days, specials and deadlines here. Every post is checked by us before it shows. Posting is free for now. If uWize ever charges for posts, it will tell you first and nothing is charged automatically. Register as an Institution.
Posts come from the institutions themselves. uWize lists them and does not take part in any application or deal. Dated posts disappear by themselves once the date has passed.
